Auckland Park

Auckland Park is a cosmopolitan suburb of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. Many nationalities and cultures have chosen Auckland Park as their dream destination. The homes have beautiful architecture. They were carefully laid out by John Landau, a New Zealander who saw the similarities of the area to his native hometown. At the turn of the century this location was out in the country and not near the then existing city of Johannesburg. It was a huge estate that concentrated on farming and had a boating lake where the Country Club is now. There was a horse racing track which is now the University of Johannesburg. Auckland also is home to the Academy of Sound Engineering and the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

The area back in 1886 had a farmer, George Harrison, who discovered gold on his farm. That brought fortune hunters and gold diggers who lived in tents. Over time more gold was discovered and the homes became more permanent and luxurious and thus created Johannesburg.

There are a number of nearby attractions to be enjoyed. They include the Johannesburg Planetarium and Gold Reef City.

The Johannesburg Planetarium has educational and fun shows each day except Sunday. School children learn about the star signs, older children are taught about the moon and other subjects, and adults can explore astronomy in even more detail. This was Africa's first full-sized planetarium and the Southern Hemisphere's second when it was built in 1960 after Johannesburg decided that, in celebration of the city's 70th anniversary, they should house a Zeiss MKIII star projector.

Gold Reef City is an amusement park on an old gold mine and has a theme of the gold rush. Staff wear costumes from the 1880s, and the buildings are also designed in that era. See how real gold is properly poured into barrels. There are live shows and an available Underground Mine Tour. The many attractions include water rides, roller coasters, and over 30 other rides such as in a horse-drawn carriage or on a steam train.
