Johannesburg is a shopper's paradise, with a wide selection of stores. Here, all-genteel fashion boutiques and enormous shopping malls, street markets and stalls, curio shops and Merchants Muti are present. The Main Road and Seventh Street in Melville are full of stores that sell books and second-hand items. In Norwood, particularly on Grant Avenue, travelers can encounter the most precious antiques to bargain prices.
Art Africa, on 62 Tyrone Avenue, vends African crafts and products that are made of recycled materials in self-help projects. At the Giraffe Center, on Second Avenue, are numerous large shops filled with arts and crafts. The side-shop of the restaurant Moyo sells a range of colorful gifts, souvenirs and furniture that are designed by artists from disadvantaged communities.
The diversity of flea markets in Johannesburg is always worth a visit, too. Bruma Market World, for example, is on a surprisingly large area and harbors more than 600 booths. Even on the stroll to the markets, people can purchase goods from one of the many street vendors.
The African Craft Market, near the Mall of Rosebank, is a must-see for all tourists. Folks do not only go there for shopping pleasure but to listen to one of the local bands that often play live music there. The Market of African Crafts is a little more expensive than the World Market; however, it also offers better quality. Here, one can even pay with credit cards, and the shopping area is among the best in African rarities.
At the Bryanston Organic Market, everything is sold either organically or made by hand. This shopping region is primarily known for its exquisite pastries, and the immense assortment of delicious, homemade cheese. An adjacent restaurant offers cakes and pots of the local rooibos (bush) tea.
In Johannesburg and its surrounding area, there are more shopping centers opening on a daily basis. Some of the best places to get everything the heart desires are the Eastgate Mall, the Mall of Rosebank, Hyde Park Corner, Fourways Mall and, of course, Sandton City. In Sandton City, the rich and famous purchase their goods. Here, one can encounter designer clothes, jewelry, electronic goods and some excellent, although expensive, curio shops.
